What is PVC Roofing?
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Roofing is one of the most popular of all roofing materials available for your commercial building. Having been used since the 1960’s, PVC membranes have more than proved to be reliable over the decades. Manufacturing plants for example will not face any problems with their roofing as PVC is resistant to chemicals. Similarly, it is possible for restaurants with other roofing systems to get damaged by the oils and fats from its grease vents but not if the roofing is made of PVC membranes. Since PVC can be recycled, it is a good choice compared to other roofing systems as it is environment friendly.
PVC is the perfect material for use in commercial roofing due to its durability and strength and also because it holds up in the most extreme climatic conditions. The minimum breaking strength required of a roofing membrane is 200 pounds per inch as per the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM). However, the minimum breaking strength of PVC roofing membranes is 350 pounds per inch which far exceeds the required strength.
The use of polyester as a reinforcement layer between two layers of PVC roof material is what make PVC roofing strong. To stop curing in a PVC roof the layers include additives that also make it more flexible and UV stable. The PVC roof is then made reflective and dust and dirt repellent by adding a layer of acrylic coating to the roof membrane. It has an added advantage over other roofing systems due to the hot air welded seams used that are impervious to moisture. While other systems use tapes, adhesives, etc. to seal seams, the hot air welded seams in the PVC roofing membranes make a watertight bond that is permanent.
Benefits of PVC
There are many benefits to using PVC for your commercial roofing needs such as:
- A good PVC roofing membrane can last longer than 20-30 years and during its service life will not require much maintenance making it affordable and durable.
- It is easy to install, maintain and repair.
- The material is strong, flexible and puncture resistant.
- It helps save on energy costs because of its reflective nature.
- Exposure to bacteria, fungi or plant roots does not affect it in any way.
- It is resistant to chemicals, greases, animal fats, acids, different kinds of fuels, moisture and leaks.
- Its strong resistance to wind and fire make it extremely safe compared to other roofing systems.
- A PVC roofing system occasionally eliminates the need for removal of the old roof as it can sometimes be installed directly over an existing roof.

Frequently Asked Questions
How Often Should You Inspect Your Roof?
It’s a good idea to inspect the roof several times during the year, especially in Winter and Spring, and then clear it off as needed. All of the leaves don’t fall at the same time, so one cleaning may not be enough.
How Can I Prevent Roof Damage?
Many types of roofs can be damaged by inexperienced people walking on them or working from them, and there is the danger of slipping or falling. If roof damage occurs, you are much more likely to develop a leak, so make sure it is an experienced person on your roof.
What Is The Main Cause of Roof Damage?
Roof leaks can be caused by many different things, however, 90% of all roof leaks are caused by improper installation or by defective metal flashing. Rarely does the actual roofing product fail.
